The Right To Be Forgotten And Implications On Digital Collections: A Survey Of Arl Member Institutions On Practice And Policy, Virginia A. Dressler, Cindy Kristof

Virginia A Dressler

In the spring of 2017, digital librarians and digital collection managers at Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions were surveyed on practices and policies surrounding takedown requests in openly accessible digital collections. The survey collected basic demographic information surrounding the digital repositories (anonymized) and presented a series of hypothetical scenarios for respondents to consider and reflect upon. The survey received a 25.8% response rate, with many intriguing insights. Survey findings are presented, along with a discussion on future recommendations for work in this area.

Linkedin At The Library: A Continuing Collaboration, Ariana Santiago, Emily Vinson, Esmeralda Fisher, Ashley Lierman, Mea Warren

Collaborative Librarianship

The University of Houston Libraries collaborated with University Career Services to host LinkedIn at the Library, an event where students were offered reviews of their LinkedIn profiles and free professional headshots. Although LinkedIn at the Library was initially funded as a one-time event, the two units worked together to turn it into a recurring event. This article presents our methods for collaboratively planning and hosting the events, attendance and assessment results, and lessons learned for future collaborative efforts. LinkedIn at the Library is a unique example of an academic library’s partnership with a career services unit.

Faculty: Other Publications and Presentations -- UT Libraries

Library instruction is most effective when thoughtfully developed with faculty and integrated in a course. But how do you determine which faculty partnerships will have the most impact? In this poster, we discuss the process of curriculum mapping in an agriculture program, how it reveals new opportunities for library instruction, and pitfalls to avoid when charting your course. In fall 2016, librarians at the University of Tennessee Hodges Library and Pendergrass Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Library developed learning outcomes for library instruction and services using feedback from staff and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy. We mapped or coded the ...

Overcoming Objections To Oer From Faculty And Administrators, Cheryl Cuillier

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Awareness and usage of open educational resources (OER) in higher education is on the rise, thanks to OER advocates and digital repositories such as the Open Textbook Library, MERLOT, Cool4Ed, OER Commons, and more. But as the Open Education Librarian at the University of Arizona Libraries, I’ve encountered a variety of concerns from faculty and administrators about OER. These range from worries about content quality to the amount of time it takes faculty to adopt/adapt/create OER to the difficulty of finding OER in a particular subject (particularly for upper-division courses). Concerns also relate to academic freedom, campus ...

Crafting Assessment Questions: Creating The Tools To Assess Information Literacy Objectives For Art And Design: A Workshop, Rebecca Feind, Kathy Clarke

Rebecca S. Kohn

Now that information literacy standards for higher education have been created and are commonly incorporated within university curricula, assessing student mastery of the objectives is the next step in creating a measurable information literacy program. In addition to responding to institutional needs for data on student learning, assessment data is a valuable resource for updating instruction programs based on student knowledge and performance. While many librarians have vast amounts of anecdotal knowledge about what students know, being able to gather hard data on what students learn from online and in-person instruction can quantify the strengths and needs of your instruction ...

The Walking Dead Genealogy: Unsubstantiated Criticisms Of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Qdas) And The Failure To Put Them To Rest, Kristi Jackson, Trena Paulus, Nicholas H. Woolf2018 Queri

The Walking Dead Genealogy: Unsubstantiated Criticisms Of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Qdas) And The Failure To Put Them To Rest, Kristi Jackson, Trena Paulus, Nicholas H. Woolf

The Qualitative Report

The authors conduct an exposé on the deterministic denunciations of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) and how citation errors keep these criticisms alive. They use a zombie metaphor to describe more than two decades of battling these seemingly mindlessassessments of QDAS that keep coming –despite their decay – and simply will not die. Focusing exclusively on the criticism of separation/distancing, which alleges that the computer and the software interfere with the researcher’s familiarity with the data, the authors trace one current strand of this criticism through a literature genealogy. Three citation errors (half-truth, proxy, and hearsay) are identified ...

Audiovisual Media Annotation Using Qualitative Data Analysis Software: A Comparative Analysis, Liliana Melgar Estrada, Marijn Koolen2018 University of Amsterdam

Audiovisual Media Annotation Using Qualitative Data Analysis Software: A Comparative Analysis, Liliana Melgar Estrada, Marijn Koolen

The Qualitative Report

The variety of specialized tools designed to facilitate analysis of audio-visual (AV) media are useful not only to media scholars and oral historians but to other researchers as well. Both Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) packages and dedicated systems created for specific disciplines, such as linguistics, can be used for this purpose. Software proliferation challenges researchers to make informed choices about which package will be most useful for their project. This paper aims to present an information science perspective of the scholarly use of tools in qualitative research of audio-visual sources. It provides a baseline of affordances based on functionalities ...
